AN EXPERIENCED TEACHER

Having taught in Oberlin (OH), Auroville (India), Botucatu (Brazil) and Colorado's front range, Dr. Sanches' experience ranges

from private lessons to coaching small groups, conducting ensembles and teaching classes at summer camps.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Since I can remember, I've always been curious about everything, and that is the source of my desire for learning and achieving. I try to instill a sense of wonder in my students, and the irreplaceable satisfaction in figuring things out. I have dealt with stress and deadlines often enough to realize that they do not produce great results, so while I encourage my students to have goals and assess progress every step of the way, great emphasis is given to their comfort level first, physically and mentally.

LESSON PLANS

I offer highly targeted, indivitualized coaching with various objectives:

General

  • mastery over the material or instrument

  • development of problem-finding and problem-solving skills

  • awareness of ergonomic, mechanically advantageous ways to perform

  • understanding of one's own learning style

  • theoretical and historical understanding of works

  • setting goals and achieving them comfortably

  • learning for the sake and joy of improving

  • having fun, recording duets (check out recordings below!)

Specific

  • Tone and sound production

  • Musicality and phrasing

  • Sight-reading

  • Ear training (aural skills)

  • Rhythmic training

  • Body awareness

  • Exercises and stretches to counter cello playing

  • How to best practice and save time

  • Advanced techniques and music interpretation

STUDIO RECORDINGS

Recording oneself is a sobering yet most-enlightening experience. Check out these recordings I've made during lessons with my students - reverb added using Nero SoundTrax:

Vivaldi g minor Double Concerto, I - Tavon, Marcelo

Bartok Canon at the Lower Fifth - Ben, Marcelo

I teach students to layer their recordings so they can do multiple-track projects at home; check out these duets I recorded using this technique:

Bartok Cushion Dance - Tavon, Marcelo

Bartok - New Year's Greeting - Marcelo Sanches

Beginning of 'Enter Sandman' arranged for cello duet:
